Mulholland Drive (2001) Movie Script (Copy)

Complete screenplay including 92 pages
Script dated January 5, 1999
Screenplay by David Lynch

For David Lynch, this version of Mulholland Drive was purer than the final one as he later had to adapt the script to meet the distributor’s requirements.

This script is also significant because it preserves original studio-issued confidentiality measures used during early development. The first page bears a numerical control stamp (“0000000160”) indicating restricted circulation and is accompanied by a memo dated January 14, 1999. These elements reflect the high level of secrecy surrounding the project during its formative stage.

This version of the screenplay represents an early iteration of the film prior to its final structure, offering insight into narrative and tonal decisions that evolved during production. As with many of Lynch’s works, the script provides a foundation that differs in notable ways from the finished film, making it especially valuable for comparative analysis.

Mulholland Drive is a 2001 neo-noir psychological film written and directed by David Lynch. Originally conceived as a television pilot, the project was later reworked into a feature film. The screenplay is particularly important for collectors and enthusiasts of Lynch’s work, as it captures the creative process behind one of his most acclaimed and enigmatic films, offering rare documentation of its development, thematic construction, and production history.

Did you know?

Our scripts come directly from the USA. They are easy to recognize because they have the standard U.S. paper size. Typically, people use A4-sized paper (297mm in height) to make fan copies of scripts. This paper size is not used in the United States; they use letter-sized paper (279mm in height). This is noticeable because this scripts usually have black lines at the top and bottom, showing that the original paper size used to copy (any American script) is smaller than A4.

Also, our scripts have been preserved under the strictest climate control standards in HVAC-R conditions, both during storage and throughout the packaging process. As a result, a label is applied after sealing them, as shown in the photos. They are bound in the same way that vault copies of scripts are preserved, without any oxidizable materials that could damage the paper. They are carefully packed in bubble wrap and placed in a cardboard box to ensure they arrive in the best possible condition.
