En trämask - Dan - Elfenbenskusten (Utan reservationspris)

This singer's mask of the Dan people from the Danané region (western Ivory Coast, bordering Liberia) is situated within the context of this group's differentiated mask typology, in which masks are understood as autonomous, spiritually effective entities (gle). Within this system, so-called "singer's masks" occupy a special role: they appear in performative contexts where song, speech rhythm, and social commentary are closely interwoven. Incl stand. Formally, the mask is characterized by a pronounced physiognomy, the sculptural modeling of which enhances its expressive effect. The bulbous, half-closed eyelids, accentuated by white pigmentation, lend the face an introverted, almost ethereal expression. The raised forehead, articulated by a central line and raised rows of dots, structures the vertical axis and points to a deliberate stylization beyond purely naturalistic representation. The mask shows signs of age and ritual use. The large, triangular nose is the dominant feature, its nostrils differentiated by fine grooves. The open mouth, with its red-rimmed, full lips, displays a row of carved teeth that appear to rest on the lower lip, reinforcing the impression of speaking or singing. A continuous "beard" made of tubular textiles extends the mask into the surrounding space and emphasizes its integration into a complete costume. The perforated edge suggests both functional attachment and performative use. The combination of sculptural density and color accentuation manifests an aesthetic that visually translates voice and presence. Literature (Selection) Fischer, Eberhard / Himmelheber, Hans: Die Kunst der Dan. Munich, 1984. Vandenhoute, René: Masques et sociétés secrètes en Afrique occidentale. Paris, 1948. Cole, Herbert M.: Icons: Ideals and Power in the Art of Africa. Washington, 1989. Himmelheber, Hans: Negro Art and Negro Artists. Braunschweig, 1960. CAB45991
