The Brenham meteorite is a famous pallasite stony-iron meteorite that fell approximately 10,000–20,000 years ago near Haviland in Kiowa County, Kansas.
Discovered in 1882, it is known for its beautiful greenish-yellow olivine crystals embedded in iron-nickel. Over 4.3 metric tons of fragments have been recovered, making it a significant source of pallasite material.
Key Facts about the Brenham Meteorite:Classification: Pallasite (PMG-an), specifically a mix of olivine crystals and iron-nickel.Discovery: Found in 1882 (and later years) near Haviland, Kansas, often referred to as the "meteorite farm".Total Weight: Over 4.3 metric tons (4,300 kg) have been recovered.Impact Structure: Associated with the Haviland Crater, a small crater (approx. 15m diameter) created by the breakup of the meteor.
Significance: Known for its striking appearance when sliced and polished, often exhibiting a Widmanstätten pattern.History: Native Americans used pieces of this meteorite to create tools and ornaments.
Key Finds: A 1,000-pound (453.6 kg) mass was found in 1949, and a 650 kg fragment was found in 2005.
Structure and CompositionBrenham is a pallasite, which is a rare type of stony-iron meteorite. These are believed to have originated from the mantle-core boundary of a differentiated planetesimal or small protoplanet in the early solar system. The olivine crystals, ranging from dark green to yellow, are often gem-quality, and the metal matrix contains roughly 8.5% nickel.
Major Finds and LocationsThe Big Well Museum (Greensburg, Kansas): Displays the 1,000-pound "Space Wanderer" found by H.O. Stockwell.Monnig Meteorite Gallery (TCU): Houses significant specimens, including large slices
