Eliza Kołodziej (b. 2000, Poland) “Crotons in Blue and Brown”, 2023 Oil on paper 11.5 × 24 cm (unframed) This still life was painted using only two pigments – Burnt Sienna and Ultramarine – together with Titanium White. The original colours are shown as reference samples in the lower left corner, revealing the limited palette from which the entire painting was created. The composition focuses on a potted croton rendered almost entirely through carefully mixed neutral greys. Subtle variations in tone define the leaves, pot and surrounding space, while visible brushwork preserves the immediacy of the painting process. Despite the restricted palette, the surface remains rich in depth and atmosphere. The work demonstrates how a simple subject and minimal means can produce a nuanced and carefully balanced composition.
