Ropp – "Everest" model pipe – France, mid-20th century A vintage tobacco pipe by the historic French manufacturer Ropp, clearly stamped "ROPP" (in oval logo) over "EVEREST" over "MADE IN FRANCE" on the base of the bowl. Ropp, founded in 1869 by Eugène-Léon Ropp, built its early reputation on cherrywood pipes before also producing briar, and continued as a family-run business across three generations before the original factory in Baume-les-Dames closed in 1991. The brand was subsequently absorbed into the Chapuis-Comoy factory (makers of Chacom) in Saint-Claude, where Ropp pipes are still produced today. Brand: Ropp Model/Line: Everest Origin: France Period: Mid-20th century (pre-1991 original factory production) Materials: This example combines two woods in a distinctive rustic style — a smooth, polished reddish-brown briar bowl, joined to a natural bark-textured shank (characteristic of cherrywood construction) that is decoratively bound with red and green thread wrapping, a detail sometimes used both ornamentally and to reinforce the wood at the joint. The mouthpiece is a bent, black vulcanite stem with a red/orange accent ring at the shank junction. Shape: Bent bulldog/apple-style bowl on an angled shank with a curved stem — a freehand rustic design. Markings: Stamped "ROPP" (oval) / "EVEREST" / "MADE IN FRANCE" with a faint model number beneath, partially legible. Condition: The briar bowl shows a good polished finish with a couple of small natural fills/imperfections typical of briar (visible as tiny dark specks — not damage). The bark-textured shank shows natural age-related surface cracking consistent with the material and is reinforced with its original decorative thread winding. Stem appears sound and undamaged.
