Titled Black Gloves and Ribbon, this impressive composition incorporates some of Clavé’s most recognizable motifs: expressive glove-like hand forms and ribbon elements, rendered through a sophisticated combination of carborundum aquatint and deep embossing. The carborundum process produces exceptionally rich tonal depth and dramatic relief, giving the surface an almost sculptural quality. Printed on heavy handmade wove paper with naturally deckled edges, the work possesses remarkable physical presence and exemplifies Clavé’s mature exploration of texture, materiality, and abstract lyricism. The print is hand-signed in pencil “Clavé” in the lower right margin and inscribed “E.A.” (Épreuve d’Artiste / Artist’s Proof) in the lower left. It also bears the artist’s embossed blind stamp, further confirming its authenticity.
