Michael Joseph (1941-) - False start inverted, Pool ladies for Playboy Interview, darkroom print

False Start (Inverted) - Original Darkroom Print by Michael Joseph Clapham, London, late 1980s Hand-titled, annotated and signed by the photographer Vintage glossy gelatin silver print Presented in a contemporary silver frame (included) Overall size: 31 × 25 cm Some photographers pressed the shutter and sent the negative to a laboratory. Michael Joseph regarded the negative as only the beginning. He spent countless hours in the darkroom, treating every print as an artwork in its own right. Working entirely by hand beneath the enlarger, he meticulously dodged and burned selected areas, balanced blacks and brilliance, adjusted exposure, manipulated contrast and relied upon chemistry, craft and decades of experience to shape the final image. The negative supplied the starting point; the darkroom became his studio. In this remarkable print, Joseph has intentionally driven the background into deep shadow, allowing the swimmers to emerge like apparitions from the darkness. A row of perfectly poised figures leans forward in rhythmic unison before the lead diver breaks formation, disappearing into an ethereal burst of reflected light. The result is less a documentary photograph than a lyrical study of movement, momentum and meticulously measured light. Rather than recording a swimming pool, Joseph transforms it into an abstract stage where light itself becomes the principal performer. The dramatic tonal transitions, bold blue-black brilliance and sculptural silhouettes are the product of painstaking darkroom craftsmanship rather than digital manipulation. Every highlight has been coaxed into place, every shadow carefully considered. Collectors will notice subtle handling marks, faint surface traces and delicate tonal variations across the print. These are not flaws but faithful witnesses to the traditional darkroom process—evidence of a photograph that was repeatedly refined through dodging, burning, chemical toning and hand-finishing. Like the visible brushstrokes on an oil painting, they quietly testify to the artist's presence at work. Perhaps the most touching detail of all is Michael Joseph's own handwritten inscription, "My Playboy Pool Ladies." There is something unexpectedly warm and personal about those three simple words. Rather than referring to the series by its commercial title, he writes of my Pool Ladies, as though greeting old friends. It is a small, intimate glimpse of the affection he retained for one of his favourite photographic adventures, lending the print an emotional resonance beyond its visual brilliance. The reverse bears a handwritten authentication confirming it as an "Authentic Darkroom print from an original negative", together with a handwritten note identifying the "False Start" finish, providing an additional level of provenance rarely encountered with vintage photographs. Best known for his iconic Beggars Banquet photographs of The Rolling Stones, Michael Joseph brought the same patient precision, playful imagination and perfectionist discipline to every commission. His prints were never merely reproductions of a negative - they were individual interpretations, patiently perfected until they reflected exactly the image he carried in his mind. The print is presented in the contemporary silver frame shown in the photographs, which is included with the sale. It is currently glazed with lightweight plexiglass for safe shipping. Collectors who prefer museum-quality or non-reflective glass can have it replaced easily and inexpensively by any local picture framer. A rare and highly collectible vintage darkroom print celebrating not only an exceptional photograph but the disappearing discipline of analogue photographic printing. It is a work that carries the artist's signature, his craftsmanship and, perhaps most movingly, his unmistakable affection for the image itself. As always, this one-off original will be carefully packaged with the utmost care to ensure it reaches its new home safely. #MichaelJoseph #Mypoolladies #VintagePhotography #DarkroomPrint #GelatinSilverPrint #AnalogPhotography #DarkroomCraft #HandPrinted #SwimmingPoolSeries #Claphampool #Poolladies #SignedPhotography #PhotographicArt #FineArtPhotography #VintagePrint #PhotographyCollectors #OneOfAKind
