Item Description This is a rectangular Japanese lacquerware box (fumibako/small box style) finished in a lustrous red-brown (vermilion) lacquer. The sliding lid features two golden pheasants in flight beneath the branches of an aged pine tree, rendered in maki-e technique, with the pine needles expressed through delicate gold brushwork. The interior of the box and the underside of the lid are finished in black lacquer with gold edging along the rim, creating a beautiful contrast with the exterior coloring. The sliding lid construction is a traditional format designed for storing small items, letters, and keepsakes. The lacquer work employs a multi-layered technique typical of Japanese decorative lacquerware, combining hira maki-e (a technique using flat gold powder) with polychrome detailing on the pheasants' heads.
