ARTISTIC DESCRIPTION Mesa de Velázquez is a patinated bronze sculpture that reflects the symbolic visual language characteristic of Irene Sierra Carreño. The work integrates engraved reliefs, stylized figures, zoomorphic motifs, and totemic elements that evoke spiritual and ancestral narratives. The conical structure crowned by a symbolic figure relates to the artist’s exploration of ritualistic forms. Surface engravings incorporate birds, organic symbols, and elements that dialogue with Latin American sculptural traditions. The piece represents the poetic synthesis present in the artist’s mature production, where sculptural form becomes a vehicle for cultural memory and spiritual narrative. 3. CONTEXT WITHIN THE ARTIST’S WORK The sculpture was created in 2005 during a period of intense sculptural production in which Irene Sierra Carreño developed volumetric compositions with strong symbolic content. During this phase, the artist explored totemic forms, engraved surfaces, and narrative compositions combining mythology, cultural memory, and contemporary artistic language. 4. RARITY AND EDITION According to verbal confirmation from the artist, only three casts of Mesa de Velázquez exist, including this example marked as Artist’s Proof (PA). The original mold was left in Chile, and no additional castings have been documented. This limited edition contributes to the rarity of the sculpture within the artist’s body of work. DOSSIER 5.
