19th Century Antique Double-Sided Folding Fan – Pierced Mother-of-Pearl Sticks – Orientalist and Courtly Scenes – Framed
An elegant antique European folding fan, most likely dating from the 19th century, mounted in a decorative fan-shaped wooden display frame.
The fan is particularly interesting for its double-sided decorated leaf, with two distinctly different figural compositions.
One side depicts a series of Orientalist / Balkan genre scenes, with figures wearing traditional Greek or Ottoman-style costumes. The composition includes figures beside a boat, a tent or camp setting, and groups of men and women in regional dress. One of the male figures wears the characteristic white pleated garment associated with traditional Greek costume. The subject reflects the strong 19th-century European fascination with Greece, the Balkans and the Ottoman world.
The opposite side presents an elegant 18th-century-style courtly scene, showing finely dressed ladies and gentlemen gathered in a garden or terrace setting. The composition recalls the romantic and aristocratic fête galante tradition, with themes of conversation, courtship and refined social life.
The fan is fitted with finely pierced mother-of-pearl sticks, decorated with delicate floral and scrolling motifs. The natural iridescence of the mother-of-pearl adds a refined decorative quality.
The fan is preserved in an ornate shaped wooden display frame with glass. The frame has decorative gilt details and sculpted ornamentation.
Due to age, both the fan and frame show signs of wear consistent with an antique object. The fan leaf displays some age-related fading, creasing and minor wear. The wooden frame has several visible knocks, chips and areas of surface loss, particularly around the edges and decorative elements. Please study the photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition description.
