O Vinho
O Legado 2011 represents the finest expression of the Douro's winemaking heritage and tradition. Conceived by Fernando Guedes and his team, it is a tribute to the origins of Sogrape and to the exceptional terroir that gave birth to one of Portugal’s most prestigious wine groups.
More than a wine, Legado is a celebration of a unique legacy, a return to the roots and authenticity of the ancient Douro vineyards, resulting in a wine of remarkable elegance, character, and ageing potential.
Tasting Notes
Legado 2011 displays a deep, intense ruby color.
On the nose, it reveals outstanding harmony and complexity, with delicate herbal notes, hints of aromatic herbs, ripe black fruits, and dried fruit, complemented by elegant spice nuances, pronounced minerality, and perfectly integrated fine oak.
On the palate, it shows excellent acidity and silky, exceptionally refined tannins, providing a solid structure, remarkable balance, and a distinctive personality. The finish is impressively long, sophisticated, and harmonious, extending the tasting experience for several minutes.
Vintage Conditions
The 2011 vintage is widely regarded as one of the finest vintages of the century in the Douro Valley.
A relatively wet winter replenished soil water reserves, while spring brought episodes of early heat accompanied by occasional thunderstorms. Summer was predominantly dry and balanced, creating ideal conditions for grape development.
Rainfall in August, followed by a warm and dry September, promoted a slow, even, and complete ripening process, resulting in grapes of exceptional quality, concentration, and balance.
Grape Varieties
Produced from a pre-phylloxera vineyard with remarkable genetic diversity, the blend consists of:
35% Touriga Franca
15% Touriga Nacional
10% Donzelinho
10% Tinta Roriz
5% Tinta da Barca
5% Rufete
5% Tinta Amarela
5% Tinta Barroca
10% Other traditional Douro grape varieties
Vinification and Ageing
Legado was vinified at the Quinta da Leda winery using state-of-the-art technology. The winemaking process involved careful grape selection and gentle, extended maceration designed to maximize aromatic expression and phenolic extraction.
Following fermentation, the wine was transferred to Vila Nova de Gaia, where it matured for approximately two years in new French oak barrels of the highest quality. It was bottled without aggressive treatments, preserving its authenticity and outstanding ageing potential.
Cellaring Potential
Although already offering an exceptional drinking experience, Legado 2011 possesses extraordinary ageing potential and is expected to evolve gracefully for more than two decades when stored under proper conditions.
For optimal preservation, bottles should be stored horizontally in a cool, dry environment away from direct light.
Serving Recommendations
To fully appreciate its complexity, it is recommended to:
Serve at 16°C to 18°C (61°F to 64°F)
Decant before serving
Open the bottle several hours prior to consumption
Food Pairing
Legado 2011 pairs beautifully with rich and structured dishes, including:
Game birds
Braised partridge
Venison and wild boar
Roasted kid goat
Rice with pork ribs marinated in wine lees
Aged and intensely flavored cheeses
A Collectible Wine
Legado 2011 is not merely a wine; it is a collector’s piece that embodies the essence of the Douro Valley and represents one of the most extraordinary Portuguese vintages of recent history.
