En trämask - Kran - Elfenbenskusten (Utan reservationspris)

A Kran mask, Toulepleu region, Ivory Coast, incl. stand. This Kran mask exhibits a powerful and highly stylized construction. Carved from dark wood, it adopts a vertical, enveloping form, dominated by a broad, domed forehead that overhangs two narrow eye openings. The center of the face is treated as a flat, angular surface, structured by a vertical nasal ridge. The wide-open mouth forms a prominent cavity above a massive lower jaw, now marked by heavy erosion and reddish-brown deposits. The exaggerated volumes, the absence of naturalistic detail, and the contrast between the smooth surfaces and the weathered areas give the mask a severe and imposing expression. The interior is deeply hollowed out to allow it to be worn in front of the face. The numerous perforations along the sides likely served to attach ties, a fiber headdress, or various elements of a masked costume. A small loop at the top may also have been part of a suspension or fastening system. In the historical traditions of the Kran people, established between western Ivory Coast and Liberia, this type of mask was part of performances combining sculpture, costume, music, and dance. Its deliberately fearsome appearance could contribute to manifesting a spiritual presence, imposing the authority of the masked figure, or intervening in social and ritual contexts. The Kran mask (masque de guerriers) from Liberia is a significant artifact within the cultural and ritualistic traditions of the Kran people, a subgroup of the larger Dan ethnic group found in Liberia and Côte d'Ivoire. These masks are often associated with warrior societies and play a crucial role in initiation rites, social control, and spiritual protection. Typically carved from wood and sometimes adorned with natural fibers, animal hair, or metal embellishments, these masks are designed to invoke powerful spiritual entities. They are worn during ceremonies to embody supernatural forces that provide guidance and protection to the community. "The warrior masks of the Kran people function as an extension of the supernatural world into human society, reinforcing hierarchical structures and maintaining the spiritual equilibrium necessary for social cohesion" Source: Ezra, K. Art of the Dan: Masks and Sculptures from Liberia and Ivory Coast.
