Untitled, from the Wakamono series - Go Mishima (三島剛) - Japan

Go Mishima (三島剛, 1924–1988) occupies a distinctive place in postwar Japanese male figurative art and underground visual culture. His works are admired for their bold portrayal of masculine beauty, tattooed bodies, disciplined linework and strong psychological presence. This work is from Mishima’s 1972 Wakamono (“Young Men”) series. The composition depicts a powerful young Japanese man seated in a traditional pose, holding a Japanese sword. His sharp sideways gaze, exposed tattooed shoulder and strong posture give the image a commanding and highly memorable presence. The contrast between the vivid irezumi-style tattoo motifs, the pale exposed torso, the black robe and the golden sword mount creates a particularly striking visual balance. Mishima’s precise black linework and finely rendered anatomy give the figure both strength and elegance. A strong and collectible example of Mishima’s visual language, combining idealised male beauty, traditional Japanese imagery, tattoo culture, sword imagery and the atmosphere of 1970s Japanese underground art. Additional details: - Unnumbered photolithograph on paper - From the 1972 publication Mishima Gō gashū Wakamono (三島剛画集 『若者』), published in Japan by Daini Shobō (第二書房) - No separate printing date, edition number or total edition size stated on the sheet - Plate signed “三島剛画” in Japanese in the lower-right area - Signature is printed as part of the image, not hand-signed - No handwritten signature or numbering - Exact paper type, individual sheet provenance and documentation are unknown - No certificate of authenticity, invoice or catalogue reference included Condition: Good vintage condition, with age-related toning, slight discolouration, minor handling marks, small spots and faint marks visible in places. Colours remain vivid and well preserved. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description. The artwork will be carefully packed with rigid protective materials and shipped with tracking. Please note that any applicable import duties, taxes, VAT, customs clearance fees and carrier handling charges are the responsibility of the buyer and are not included in the winning bid or shipping cost.
