Living National Treasure Takuo Kato (Koobei Kiln) — Unique Lapis Lazuli Glaze "Kushime" Vase — Year 2000 This is an exceptionally striking lapis lazuli blue glazed vase (Hanaire/Kabin) crafted by Takuo Kato (1917-2005), the 6th generation head of the renowned Koobei Kiln (Koubei Gama) in Tajimi, Gifu Prefecture, Japan. The box inscription indicates this piece was a "Special Creation" for the Year 2000. This vase features a deep, vivid lapis lazuli blue glaze (Ruri Yu), which is known for its beautiful, intense color, achieved by firing a glaze colored with cobalt oxide. The body of the vase is heavily textured with a technique known as "Kushime" (comb marking), creating a surface reminiscent of clustered grapes or gourds. The neck is adorned with two small, spherical "ears" or handles, adding a subtle classical touch to the avant-garde body. The contrasting white base bears the artist's subtle carved signature (see photos). Background and Significance of the Artist and Kiln Takuo Kato was a pivotal figure in modern Japanese ceramics, celebrated for his relentless pursuit of ancient techniques. He was certified as a Living National Treasure (Bearer of Important Intangible Cultural Property) by the Japanese government in 1995 for his restoration work on the ancient Three-Color Glaze (Sansai), a technique originally used for the treasures of the Shosoin Repository. However, Kato is perhaps even more internationally famous for his successful revival of the lost Persian ceramic technique, "Lusterware" (Rasu-tai). His study of Persian and Middle Eastern ceramics throughout the Silk Road route profoundly influenced his work, giving rise to unique pieces like this one, which combine traditional Japanese forms with the intense blue color inspired by the historical "Persian Blue." His works are held in major collections worldwide.
