W. Newman & Co. - Newman' Indian Bradshaw. A guide for railway travellers in India - 1926

Newman’s Indian Bradshaw – July 1926 (Issue No. 728) Published monthly under the patronage of the Government of India by W. Newman & Co., Ltd., Great Eastern Hotel, Calcutta, this rare July 1926 edition of the Indian Bradshaw represents one of the most complete surviving examples of India’s most important railway guide of the colonial era. Modeled after the famous British Bradshaw’s Guide, this publication provided essential travel information for officials, merchants, and travellers navigating the vast railway, steamship, and postal networks of British India. The volume contains a wealth of meticulously printed railway timetables, fare tables, and travel routes for the Indian State Railways, including lines such as the Bikaner State Railway and the Bombay, Baroda & Central India Railway. The guide also lists postal, telegraph, and conveyance rates, as well as accommodation recommendations in major cities like Calcutta, Bangalore, Darjeeling, and Murree. A highlight of this issue is the original large folding railway map of India, printed in black and red, with insets of Calcutta and Ceylon (Sri Lanka). The map remains crisp and intact—a rare survival, as these were often lost or damaged in use. The volume also retains the original “Send it every month” order form, another uncommon feature. Richly illustrated with contemporary advertisements—Lipton’s Tea, Parker Duofold Pens, Underwood Duplicators, Falkner’s Deflatable Globe, and M.S. Watches—the guide offers a vivid window into the commercial and cultural landscape of 1920s British India. Condition: Complete and well-preserved. The softcover shows minor edge wear and age-related creasing, but the spine remains intact. Pages are clean and lightly toned. The folding map is complete and neatly folded, with no tears. An exceptionally well-preserved example of early Indian railway history and British colonial travel culture.
