This is an Tsuina mask 追儺鬼 made in Ueda Mitsuyo上田光代. It is an impressive, slightly larger size. It features a demon-like expression. The back is engraved as follows: 石手寺 Ishiteji Temple 伊予刀 Iyo Sword 上田光代氏之作 Made by Ueda Mitsuyo 昭和56年6月17日 June 17, 1981 Tsuina is a ritual to drive away evil spirits and plague gods on New Year's Eve, or a demon-driving ritual that has been held among the general public on Setsubun and other days since the early Heian period. Tsuina was originally a Chinese event that was imported into Japan and eventually became an annual event at the Imperial Court.
