Uchiyama Shūhō – Noh Theater Character Painting on Shikishi Board - Uchiyama Shuho (1876–1963) - Japan (Utan reservationspris)
Description:
This elegant painting depicts a dignified Noh theater character, portrayed with refined brushwork and rich traditional colors. The artist captures the stately presence of an elderly performer in full ceremonial costume, complete with ornate brocade robes and a beautifully detailed fan. The gold-accented patterns and soft gradients reflect the aesthetics of classical Nihonga, while the expressive face conveys the depth and solemnity characteristic of Noh drama. Executed on a formal shikishi board, the piece combines theatrical tradition with decorative beauty. A finely preserved work, ideal for collectors of Noh-related art, Nihonga painting, and mid-20th-century Japanese stage iconography.
Author:
Uchiyama Shuho (1876–1963) was a Japanese painter active from the Meiji to early Shōwa period. Born in Yokohama, he studied under Naitō Tekiho and Nakajima Kyosai, later joining the Japan Painting Association. Renowned for his refined Nihonga style, Uchiyama specialized in depictions of Noh theatre and elegant seasonal scenes. His works combine delicate brushwork, soft colors, and a serene sense of formality, reflecting both classical refinement and modern sensitivity. After moving to Kyoto in 1926, he continued to paint Noh subjects, earning recognition as one of the distinguished artists of early twentieth-century Japanese traditional painting.
