伊藤深水 Ito Shinsui (1898-1972)
Ukiyo-e artist, Japanese-style painter, and printmaker active during the Taisho and Showa periods. His real name was Ito Hajime. He inherited the orthodox tradition of the Utagawa school of ukiyo-e and became renowned for his portraits of beautiful women rendered in the uniquely soft expression characteristic of Japanese painting. Though he wished to paint subjects beyond his popular “beauty paintings”, he received no commissions for other works, experiencing periods of artistic frustration. He produced numerous major works using his wife, Yoshiko, as a model, thereby enhancing his reputation. After the war, alongside his beauty paintings, he frequently produced Japanese paintings on personal, unique subjects. His immense popularity led to many of his works being distributed as reproduction prints in the post-war period.
with signature 'Shinsui' 深水 and seal 'Hikuntei' 此君亭
This elegant hanging scroll is attributed to Ito Shinsui (1898–1972), one of the most celebrated masters of early modern Japanese bijin-ga. The painting portrays a graceful young beauty standing beside blooming plum branches — a classic motif symbolizing purity, renewal, and the quiet strength of femininity. Rendered with Shinsui’s characteristic refinement, the figure is dressed in a softly colored kimono, her posture serene and contemplative. The delicate treatment of the plum blossoms, coupled with the gentle atmosphere of early spring, creates a timeless poetic scene. The scroll bears the signature “Shinsui” 深水 and the seal “Hikuntei” 此君亭, a name historically associated with the artist. It is accompanied by its original wooden box (tomobako), also inscribed and sealed in matching manner. A beautiful example of 20th-century bijin-ga aesthetics and an evocative decorative piece for both collectors of Japanese art and admirers of refined figurative painting.
