Anna Hue-Roques

An elegant gentleman’s umbrella dating to the early 20th century, retaining its original black canopy and exemplifying the refined craftsmanship of high-quality London umbrella making at the turn of the century. The shaft combines polished wood with a finely figured natural bamboo section, creating a subtle and sophisticated contrast of materials, and is finished with a gracefully curved .925 sterling silver handle, softly worn and attractively patinated through age and use.

The umbrella was retailed by Paragon Fox, London, a respected name associated with well-made gentleman’s umbrellas of the period. The original canopy survives in good antique condition, showing only light, even wear consistent with age and careful use. The internal metal frame and ribs remain intact and functional. The bamboo and wooden shaft display a warm, mellow patina with minor surface marks, while the sterling silver handle shows gentle wear and natural toning that enhance its period character.

Overall, the umbrella is in good antique condition, presenting as a refined and evocative example of an early 20th-century gentleman’s accessory. Combining desirable originality, quality materials and elegant proportions, it represents an attractive acquisition for collectors of antique umbrellas and canes, as well as a striking decorative piece with clear period presence.
