1910s Cailler Swiss Chocolates - Kasten - Samt, Pappe - Art Deco

Cailler Swiss Chocolates Art Deco velvet presentation box, 1910s – In excellent condition – No reserve. Rare Art Deco Swiss chocolate presentation box by Cailler, dating from the 1910s. This refined example reflects the luxurious marketing culture of the early 20th century, when high-end chocolatiers presented their products in decorative keepsake boxes intended to be reused long after the chocolates were enjoyed. The lid is richly decorated with deep red velvet and pleated silk detailing, centred by an elegant oval portrait of a young woman in early 20th-century style, framed with twisted gilt cord. The interior is lined in matching red velvet and retains the original Cailler label, marked “Swiss Chocolates – Bonbons Fins”. The underside bears a “Prepared in Switzerland” label and original production marking. Historical context Cailler is one of Switzerland’s oldest and most prestigious chocolate manufacturers, founded in 1819 by François-Louis Cailler. The company played a pioneering role in the industrialisation and international reputation of Swiss chocolate, introducing refined production methods and positioning chocolate as a luxury product rather than a simple confection. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Cailler had become synonymous with quality, elegance, and innovation in packaging. During the 1910s, the brand invested heavily in sophisticated presentation, using textiles, portrait imagery, and decorative boxes to appeal to an affluent clientele. These boxes were deliberately designed as lasting objects, bridging the late Art Nouveau aesthetic and the emerging clarity and symmetry that would define the Art Deco movement.
