This seated Great Buddha statue was created around 150 years ago, during the Meiji period. Its serene expression is striking. The entire statue is meticulously finished, from the head, face, robe, and pedestal. It is a relatively large Buddha statue, but I feel it is highly refined. The spot (similar to a mole) on the Great Buddha's forehead is called a "byakugo 白毫." I believe the byakugo has been replaced with a new one. By the way, the Great Buddha's head is called a "rahotsu 螺髪." Byakugo 白毫 Meaning: A curl of long white hair in the center of the forehead. Function: The light emitted from this symbolizes the "power of the Buddha" to illuminate the world and find those who are suffering.
