Exclusive rare Art Deco porcelain figurine titled “Dancer”, designed in 1936 by the famous artist Gustav Oppel (1891-1978) for Rosenthal Art Department in Selb, in perfect condition.
It depicts a beautiful lady dancer tiptoeing with both hands lifted in the air, in a gracious pose. Dressed in light green short dress, naturalistic hand painted with delicacy, on an elevated round colonnade base.
This is a rare collector item with references in well known catalogs as “Niecol” vol3, page 79, previously numbered #1605 as “Torchbearer” then numbered #1606 as “Dancer” (without torch), both designed same year 1936.
Gustav Oppel was a well-known German modeller and sculptor who learned the profession of a model maker at the Aeltesten Volkstedter porcelain factory in Rudolstadt-Volkstedt, where his father and brother Alfred Oppel worked.
Before 1912, he began studying at the drawing school at the Academy of Applied Arts in Dresden and institute Kunstgewerbemuseum in Munich under the supervision of Professor Heinrich Waderé and pupil of Joseph Wackerle.
Since the turn of 1918/1919 he worked as an independent sculptor (porcelain sculpture) and made designs between 1915-1924 for the Schwarzburger Werkstätten for Porzellankunst in Unterweißbach, the Aelteste Volksstedter porcelain factory in Rudolstadt, and between 1924-36 for Rosenthal in Selb Bavaria.
He was a member of the Reich Union of German Artists.
It is in excellent condition more to pristine, marked with Rosenthal Selb Germany specific year mark of 1948, U.S. zone, rare two impressed numbers, previously numbered #1605 and #1606 as per references from literature, impressed G.O. on the top of the base, NO chips, NO cracks and NO repairs, please see the pictures as they are part of description.
