It was released in the UK on November 30, 1979 and in the US on December 8, 1979. The album was largely conceived and written by Roger Waters, the band's bassist. "The Wall" is a concept album that tells a coherent story. It's about Pink, a rock star who barricades himself behind a metaphorical wall due to personal problems and traumatic experiences. The story is partly based on Waters' own experiences and is shaped by the loss of his father in World War II, his mother's overprotection, the pressures of fame and personal alienation. The album contains a wide range of musical styles characteristic of Pink Floyd's progressive rock sound. It combines elements of rock, progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and orchestral arrangements. The album was presented in a lavish live show known as "The Wall Tour". Additionally, "The Wall" was made into a concept film directed by Alan Parker in 1982.
