Sergio Larraín - Café de marins, Valparaíso, Chile, 1963

Sergio Larraín. Café de marins, Valparaíso, Chile, 1963. In this image captured by Sergio Larraín in 1963, a young becomes the silent center of a scene filled with suggestion. Her face, still and melancholic, contrasts with the blurred, anonymous male figure in the foreground — a symbol of a fleeting, external world. The “Limón Soda” sign on the wall, the empty bottles, and the oblique framing —so characteristic of Larraín— enhance the atmosphere of uprootedness and urban poetry. This photograph belongs to his mythical series on Valparaíso, one of the most influential bodies of work in 20th-century Latin American photography. 'Copyright Sergio Larraín / Magnum Photos' in the lower right corner. Total dimensions: 34,8 x 29,6 cm on glossy paper. Very Fine condition. Printed later, 2000s. Sergio Larraín is considered one of the most enigmatic and visionary photographers of the 20th century. His work stands alongside that of masters such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, William Klein, Robert Frank, Josef Koudelka, and Saul Leiter, for his ability to blend documentary with the dreamlike. His style tilts street photography toward a lyrical and existential dimension. Sergio Larraín (Chile, 1931–2012) was the first Chilean photographer to join the prestigious Magnum Photos agency. Acclaimed for his unique and introspective vision, his career was brief but decisive: he abandoned professional photography at the age of 40 to pursue a contemplative life. His work, rediscovered in recent years, has been exhibited at MoMA, the Fondation Cartier-Bresson, and various major auction houses. His Valparaíso series, brought to light again by Cartier-Bresson, has become a visual and emotional reference on the port city.
