⸻
Offered here is an outstanding bronze medal issued under Napoleon Bonaparte, First Consul, commemorating the solemn transfer of the remains of Henri de La Tour d’Auvergne, Vicomte de Turenne, one of the greatest French military commanders, to the Temple of Mars (Les Invalides).
This historic event took place on the 5th Complementary Day of Year VIII (22 September 1800) by order of Napoleon himself. The reverse inscription explicitly records the decree of the First Consul and the minister Lucien Bonaparte, giving this piece extraordinary historical resonance.
Your example is an especially premium specimen distinguished by a magnificent multicolour iridescent patina, showing vivid tones of violet, blue, gold, pink, and copper, shifting beautifully under the light.
This type rarely survives with such exceptional toning and fully lustrous, original surfaces.
