Japanese Ceramic Platter with Original Wooden Box Bamboo-Weave Style / Wabi-Sabi Aesthetic This piece is a Japanese ceramic platter (large dish) made in Japan. The entire surface features a three-dimensional texture reminiscent of a woven bamboo basket, giving the ceramic work an organic appearance that evokes the feel of natural materials despite being made of clay. Fine vertical grooves are applied consistently across the surface, creating a rhythmic pattern similar to traditional bamboo weaving. These textures interact beautifully with light, producing rich shadows and depth. Combined with the warm brown-toned glaze that highlights the natural color of the clay, the piece conveys both calmness and strength. The platter is intentionally not perfectly symmetrical; subtle variations can be seen in the rim height and overall outline. This uneven form is not a flaw, but rather an intentional expression of the traditional Japanese aesthetic of Wabi-Sabi, which values natural irregularity, imperfection, and the beauty of chance. By avoiding strict symmetry, the work expresses warmth, depth, and the character of hand craftsmanship. Traces of wheel-throwing remain visible on both the interior and exterior surfaces, allowing the viewer to sense the making process. On the underside, three firing support marks can be observed, which are natural traces from the firing process and form part of the piece’s individual character. The platter can be used as a serving dish, but it is also well suited as a decorative plate or an art object, bringing a strong presence to an interior space and reflecting the spirit of Japanese ceramics and folk craft traditions. An original wooden box (tomobako) is included, bearing an ink inscription and seal on the lid. This indicates that the piece has been carefully preserved over a long period of time. ⸻ Condition • Surface wear, glaze unevenness, and small irregularities consistent with age • Kiln effects and firing marks originating from the production process • Slight irregularity in shape is part of the intended design • No noticeable cracks or restorations • The wooden box shows age-appropriate wear and staining As this is a handmade item, slight variations in shape and surface expression may occur. Colors may appear slightly different depending on the viewer’s monitor or display settings. ⸻ Size (approx.) • Diameter: approx. 26–27 cm • Height: approx. 7 cm
