Full vellum binding with hand-lettered spine. First edition thus of this florilegium—a literary anthology consisting of curated excerpts, aphorisms, and moral maxims written by Erasmus of Rotterdam. Comes with an engraved title vignette and an engraved initial. Rubbing, bumping, soiling, and wear to the boards and spine. There is some damage to the vellum binding at the boards and spine (see photos). Pencil markings on the page facing the very last page. Page 261/262 has some tears mended at the top, not affecting the text. Pages 363 until the end have a spot on the top, not affecting the text. The empty flyleaves at the end are creased and a bit damaged at the outer corner. The text is clear, the paper is crisp, and the binding is solid. Overall, and considering its age, a nice copy in very good – condition.
