This is a traditional Japanese Shigaraki-ware (Shigaraki-yaki) ceramic statue of a Tanuki, often referred to as the Japanese Raccoon Dog. Shigaraki, one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns, is world-renowned for these iconic statues which are considered powerful charms for prosperity and good fortune. The Tanuki is famous for the "Eight Lucky Traits" (Hasso Engi): The Sedge Hat: Protects against trouble and bad weather. Large Eyes: To perceive the environment clearly and make good decisions.
