Biography Yamamoto Baiitsu (1783-1856) Tenmei 3 (1783)-Ansei 3 (1856) A painter of the late Edo period born in Owari (Nagoya). His personal name was Chikasuke and his style name was Meikyo. He used many art names including Baiitsu, Baiitsu, Gyokuzen Koji, Tendo Gaishi, Shunen, Baika Shujin, and Baika Dojin. He studied under Yamada Kyujō and Chō Gesshō. Under the wealthy merchant Kamiya Tenyu, he devoted himself to copying classical paintings of the Yuan and Ming periods and refined his skills. At the age of twenty-one, he went to Edo with Nakabayashi Chikuto and traveled widely throughout the country. In Ansei 1 (1854), he returned to Nagoya and became an official painter of the domain. He died in Ansei 3(1856) at the age of seventy-four.
