Senshukai Royal Pet – Sammlung von 9 Vintage-Holztiere - Kirschenholz (Yamazakura) - Japan - 1900-2000

Item Description A carefully curated collection of 9 vintage wooden animal figurines from Senshukai's highly sought-after "Royal Pet" series, manufactured during the limited period of 1960-1970s. This charming set represents a significant piece of Japanese mid-century design history and showcases the exceptional craftsmanship of traditional kokeshi artisans. Royal Pet is a legendary series created by Senshukai, a company originally renowned for kokeshi doll manufacturing. The company name itself derives from "Kokeshi Sentai Shumi Shushu no Kai" (Society for Collecting One Thousand Kokeshi). Inspired by the Nordic design boom of the 1960s and Scandinavian wooden toys, Senshukai ventured into creating wooden toy animals specifically for children, applying their kokeshi-making expertise to a new medium. Each piece in this collection is meticulously handcrafted by skilled kokeshi artisans using Japanese cherry wood (yamazakura), showcasing the warm texture and natural grain characteristic of this premium material. The smooth, rounded forms and endearing expressions reflect the influence of Nordic design aesthetics, reminiscent of iconic designers like Kay Bojesen and Christian Vedel, while maintaining a distinctly Japanese sensibility. These figurines were originally sold through a monthly subscription service (hanpukai system), with different animals delivered each month at an affordable price of 100 yen per piece. The series consisted of 20 different animals in total, making complete or near-complete sets increasingly rare and valuable in today's collector market. This business model revolutionized the collectible industry in Japan and contributed to Senshukai's explosive growth, with membership reaching 100,000 within just three years. The compact size of approximately 10 cm makes these pieces perfect for display in various settings, whether on bookshelves, desks, or as part of a curated interior arrangement. Some pieces feature moveable parts, adding interactive charm to their appeal. The natural aging patina and wood texture have only enhanced their character over the decades. These items are no longer in production and have become highly valued vintage collectibles among interior design enthusiasts and mid-century modern collectors worldwide. They represent an important chapter in Japanese design history and the evolution of the mail-order business model. Size Height: 7 cm Width: 6 cm Depth: 11.5 cm (Note: This represents the overall package dimensions. Individual animal sizes vary, with most pieces measuring approximately 6-13 cm in height) Weight 605 g Condition Good vintage condition with minor age-appropriate wear consistent with items from the 1960s-1970s era. Some pieces may show light scratches or natural patina typical of cherry wood aging. NOTICE: The lot will be carefully packaged and sent by Japan Post, DHL or FedEx depend on the situation. It takes about 3 weeks to receive normally. Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Sometimes Customes or delivery company in your country contact you for Customs clearance via phone or email. Please make sure that you could answer the phone. If you don't, the parcel will return to me and it cost more double shipping fee for reshipping. I appreciate your cooperation.
