Zwei Meisterwerke japanischer Kokeshi-Puppen von legendären, preisgekrönten Künstlern - Holz - Japan - Shōwa Zeit (1926-1989)

Item Description This lot consists of two outstanding Japanese creative kokeshi dolls, each made by a highly celebrated master of the modern kokeshi movement. Both pieces represent the pinnacle of postwar Japanese kokeshi artistry, combining refined form, expressive carving, and sophisticated decorative techniques. The left doll is titled “Flowered Kosode.” It was created by Hajime Miyashita, one of the most respected figures in the kokeshi world and a four-time recipient of the Prime Minister’s Award. This piece features a softly rounded head with a delicate bow ornament and a gently tapering body. The surface is finely finished, with subtle floral motifs that evoke the elegance of a traditional kosode kimono. The overall impression is graceful and lyrical. The artist’s seal is stamped on the base. The right doll is titled “Beautiful Spring.” It was created by the first-generation Usaburo Okamoto, founder of the Usaburo Kokeshi Studio and a recipient of the Minister of International Trade and Industry Award. He is also renowned for producing works acquired by Emperor Showa. This doll features a distinctive sculptural hairstyle framing the face and a deeply carved body decorated with floral motifs. The use of carving and painted relief gives the surface a strong sense of depth and movement, a hallmark of Usaburo’s pioneering style. The original artist label remains on the base. Both dolls show light surface wear, small scratches, and minor paint losses consistent with age and careful handling. There are no major cracks or restorations observed. Overall condition is very good and appropriate for high-quality vintage wooden kokeshi.
