Crafted from black-fired clay with intricate stamped wave patterns on the exterior, the pieces feature luxurious gold-foil interiors applied using a foil-pressing technique that gives a radiant, textured finish. The design evokes ancient Jōmon-era motifs and a sense of natural energy, symbolising longevity and harmony. The set consists of three stackable lidded boxes that can be assembled into a tower-like form (as shown in the photos). When disassembled, they form four components: three bases with gold-lined interiors and one lid. This versatile work functions both as a sculptural contemporary artwork and as a set of usable containers. The pieces are rooted in the tradition of Mashiko ware, a Japanese pottery produced around Mashiko in Tochigi Prefecture since the late Edo period. Mashiko ware is characterised by an earthy clay body, substantial thickness, and a softly rounded, warm feel in the hand. The deeply carved surface pattern (often referred to as “Shinjin-mon”, or deep impressed pattern) accentuates the powerful texture of the clay. The black colour is achieved through high-temperature carbonisation firing, a relatively uncommon technique within Mashiko ware that produces an elegant, chic jet-black surface. The bases bear the artist’s signature. Age-appropriate wear and handling marks are present, including light blemishes and signs of use. The gold leaf inside the boxes shows areas of wear. Overall good used condition. Please review all photos carefully for the complete condition. Dimensions: approx.
