【Product details】
This elegant early 20th century Japanese tachi sword stand is decorated with the Tokugawa family crest, the Mitsuba Aoi, one of the most prestigious heraldic symbols in Japanese history. The stand is entirely finished in a nashiji ground, over which delicate gold maki-e scrollwork and repeated Mitsuba Aoi crests are finely applied, creating a refined and dignified appearance.
Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique where gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to produce intricate designs. Nashiji employs a similar method, using fine gold flecks to create a pear skin-like texture, giving the surface a subtle shimmer and depth.
The upright support is shaped with a gentle curve specifically designed to display a tachi, enhancing the natural elegance of the sword.
The Mitsuba Aoi crest is the emblem of the Tokugawa shogunate, which ruled Japan for over 260 years during the Edo period. Objects bearing this crest were associated with the highest levels of the warrior class and were often made for formal use, temple donations, or occasions connected to the Tokugawa family.
The stand shows age-related wear, minor surface scratches, discolouration, and patina consistent with its age, all of which contribute to its historical character. Please refer to the photos for details.
