Tamate ishi’dôrô 玉手石灯籠 (Gartenlaterne) - Granit - Japan - Mitte der Shôwa-Periode (Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts)
A special four-part granite oki’dôrô 置燈籠 (legless lantern), belonging to the tamate ishi’dôrô 玉手石灯籠 type. The term tama 玉 means “ball,” referring to the rounded form characteristic of this lantern style.
Carved from light grey granite with subtle black and white mottling. The oki’dôrô 置燈籠 is a portable, footless stone lantern commonly found in Japanese gardens, and this example represents a distinct subtype of that form.
From the bottom to the top:
• Starting with the chûdai 中台 (central platform), which represents sui 水 (water). Usually placed on a pedestal, it functions as the base here with lowely undulating rim on the bottom.
• The next part is the hibukuro 火袋 (fire box), which encases the light source and symbolizes ka 火 (fire). It is round and features different reticulated panels: two square openings to place a light source (ensô), and two depicting the sun and moon.
• The domed kasa 笠 (umbrella roof) follows, representing fû (air) as it reaches near the sky.
• Finally, it is crowned with the hôju 宝珠 (wish-fulfilling jewel), shaped like a lotus bud, symbolizing kû 空 (void or spirit).
Approximate dimensions:
Height 57.5 cm, Diameter of kasa 54 cm.
The precise age of such lanterns is difficult to determine, but this example was likely carved in the Mid-Shôwa period (mid-20th century). It exhibits a pleasing natural patina and remains in very good original condition. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference.
For safe transport, the lantern will be securely packed on a wooden pallet.
When shipped, we will include a certificate of authenticity.
