Edo-Period Japanese Lacquered Metal Crab – Signed 安親造 (Yasuchika), Hinged Construction - Skulptur Metall - Japan - Späte Edo-Zeit

Edo-Period Japanese Lacquered Metal Crab – Signed 安親造 (Yasuchika), Hinged Construction Late Edo period, c. 1760–1850 Japanese Edo-period articulated metal sculpture in the form of a crab, executed in solid metal with red lacquer decoration. The underside bears a clearly incised and lacquered signature 「安親造」 (Yasuchika saku – “made by Yasuchika”). 安親 (Yasuchika) is a well-known Edo-period metalworking name, associated with the Yasuchika school, a major lineage of decorative metal artists active from the mid-Edo period onward, particularly noted for refined animal subjects and technically sophisticated metalwork. The crab is fully three-dimensional and constructed using hinged and articulated elements, rather than being cast as a single static form. The surface retains original red lacquer with extensive age wear and natural patination consistent with Edo-period manufacture. Function: Likely produced as a decorative object (okimono) or scholar’s curiosity rather than a utilitarian fitting. Cultural context: Crabs symbolized tenacity and perseverance in Edo-period visual culture and were popular seasonal motifs. Construction note: Articulated construction reflects the late Edo fascination with mechanical realism. Minor loss to the tip of one leg, as visible in photographs; otherwise structurally intact. Disclaimer Attribution to the Yasuchika school (安親) is based on the engraved signature and stylistic characteristics consistent with Edo-period Japanese decorative metalwork. This attribution is made in good faith; no independent certificate accompanies the lot. The object shows age-consistent wear, surface loss, and minor damage, including loss to the tip of one leg, all visible in the photographs. No restoration is known or claimed. Please review all images carefully, as they form an essential part of the description. Any applicable import duties, customs charges, VAT, or local taxes are the responsibility of the buyer. The seller has no control over these fees and cannot predict their amount.
