Wal - Fossiles Fragment - Basilosaurus - 13.8 cm - 8 cm (Ohne mindestpreis)
→13.8 cm long x 8 cm wide Basilosaurus jaw fragment
→144 grams weight
This is a very beautiful fossilized jaw fragment specimen of Basilosaurus. The most important and characteristic feature of this fossil is from the junction of the jaw which have canine and then the first pre-molar.
Basilosaurus have hetero denitation meaning it teeth varied along the jaw and each teeth or set of teeth are meant for specified function. This is shown in provided photo indicating the position of this beautiful jaw fragment fossil
One of very interesting part of this fossil is the exposed teeth whose fragment is lost to fossil retrieval revealing very intriguing inside of the canine. The pre-molar features its ridges for shearing flesh of from the prey. The fossil has nice blend of light colored jaw with light brown/yellowish teeth. The underside of the fossil and sides of the jaw exhibit very cool mineralization, crystallization shedding light on the prolonged 35 million year old fossilization process which turns biological specimen into mineral, crystal, rock, sand etc.
We would like to emphasize, that its very hard to tell exact member of Basilosauridae famly. This jaw can belong to juvenile Basilosaurus or Durodon or Zygorhiza etc. Nevertheless, without any question, it do belong to a Basilosauridae.
As can be seen necessary repair and restoration have been done on the specimen to make it long lasting and is conserved as well.
Detailed photos have been provided for reference about the color, size, shape and various aspects of this fossil.
