A pretty lacquer tea caddy 棗 (natsume) by Nakatani Hakuhô 中谷博峰 (b. 1948) with refined hiramaki-e 平蒔絵 (low-relief lacquer design) showcasing autumn leaves 紅葉 (momiji) and cherry blossoms 桜 (sakura). Executed in shades of gold and pink red lacquer with nashiji 梨子地 (sprinkled gold lacquer) accents on a glossy black lacquer substrate. The interior is also coated with the same smooth black lacquer finish. Including original wooden signed and sealed tomobako 供箱 (storage box), signed and sealed 'Hakuhô' 博峰 by the artist. Nakatani Hakuhô 中谷博峰 (b. 1948) is a lacquer artist associated with the Yamanaka lacquerware tradition of Ishikawa Prefecture 石川県. Born on 6 January 1948 (Shôwa 23), he has been active since the 1970s and has exhibited regularly at the Yamanaka Shikki New Works Exhibition 山中漆器新作展, receiving several awards including the Yamanaka Wooden Lacquerware Cooperative Director’s Prize 山中木製漆器組合理事賞 and the Ishikawa Prefectural Governor’s Prize 石川県知事賞 in 1994 (Heisei 6). His work has also been shown at the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition 日本伝統工芸展, the National Lacquerware Exhibition 全国漆器展, and the Kaga Art Exhibition 加賀美術展.
