Loewe-Opta - Atlas 2790W -1957 Röhrenradio

Loewe-Opta Atlas 2790W Tube Radio – Walnut Veneer – 1957 The Loewe-Opta Atlas 2790W (1957) is an iconic West-German superheterodyne tube radio, engineered at the height of the golden Hi-Fi era. This high-end table model features warm walnut veneer, solid brass trim, and sculptural bakelite control knobs with brass accents—an exemplary combination of technical ambition and refined 1950s decorative craftsmanship. Originally introduced at 449 DM in its first year of sale, the Atlas sat firmly in the premium segment of the market, offering a powerful 9-watt audio stage and an unusually rich 4-loudspeaker configuration for wide, room-filling sound. The radio was equipped with a switchable and rotatable ferrite antenna and a Ferrit frame aerial (464/464/473 kHz IF variants possible), allowing precise directional reception—an advanced feature for its class. This unit is fully functional: the dial illumination works and bakelite buttons operate crisply. The set powers on and produces a characteristic 50 Hz mains hum; stations are faintly audible in the background, indicating that the audio and RF stages are responsive. Restoration or alignment of the capacitors and filtering stage is advised for optimal performance—common for tube sets of this age. Technical specifications.
