A massive solid keyaki wooden, so-called, Ebisu jizai 自在 (pot hook). Called that way after the shape of Ebisu’s hat. Ebisu 恵比須 is the Japanese god of fishermen and luck, one of the Seven gods of Fortune 七福神 (Shichifukujin).
These hooks were traditionally suspended from a sturdy beam above the sunken hearth using a rope. With an adjustable hook attached to is, to hold a kettle on the desired height over the hearth.
Made of precious ‘Keyaki’ wood (Zelkova - Japanese oak) varnished in a reddish brown hue with a lively woodgrain and ageda patina.

Height 64.5 cm, Width 43.5 cm, Depth 17.5-25 cm.
Weight 19.4 kg.
Period: Japan – Meiji period (1868-1912).
In a good original condition with patina of ages use. Underside with some wood loss due to use above a fire. Please look at the photos for a condition reference.
