Byôbu (Faltbildschirm) - Seide, Papier, lackiertes Holz - Japan - Shōwa Zeit (1926-1989)

An intriguing tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) featuring various scenes from The Tale of Genji 源氏物語 (Genji Monogatari). Most scenes unfold inside open pavilions, offering views of seasonal flowers and landscaped garden settings. The nobles are dressed in luxurious Heian-period robes, shown gathered in conversation or meeting in smaller, more intimate groups. In the upper left corner appears Princess Ukifune, taken by boat by Prince Niô to his cottage, a scene from Chapter 51 Ukifune 浮舟 (A Boat Cast Adrift). At the centre along the lower register is a scene from Chapter 7 Momiji no ga 紅葉賀 (An Imperial Celebration of Autumn Foliage), depicting the famous dance performance by Prince Genji and Tô no Chûjô, known as Waves of the Blue Sea. Above this, a scene from Chapter 42 Niou no miya 匂宮 (The Fragrant Prince) shows Yûgiri, now a Minister, leading a procession of courtiers in ox-drawn carts from the palace to a banquet at the Rokujô estate. The young nobles in attendance are potential suitors for his youngest daughter, Rokunokimi. Yûgiri favours Prince Niou as a prospective son-in-law, Niou being Genji’s grandson by the Akashi Consort, now Empress. The compositions are enveloped by golden clouds accented with double dotted low-relief lines along the edges. Executed in colour and ink on golden silk mounted on a paper ground. The painting is bordered by two brocade silk trims: a slender brown inner band and a broad green outer band. The screen is framed in black lacquered wood fitted with protective metal hardware. Period: Japan – Shôwa period (1926–1989) Dimensions: Total width 376 cm (2 × 64 cm, 4 × 62 cm); Height 172.3 cm In very good condition with minimal traces of wear consistent with age on both sides. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference. This folding screen is well-suited for mounting flat on a wall and displaying as a single work of art. When shipped, we will include a certificate of authenticity.
