A Swiss Lötschental mask for the Tschäggättä carnival carved from pine wood with goats hair and goats teeth for a height of 19cm and weight of 167g. Annotated to the reverse and dated 1970. The masked carnival figures characteristic of Lötschental, the so-called Tschäggättä, appear in the period between the Catholic holiday of Candlemas and Shrove Tuesday (the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday). Every evening after work these wild figures streak through the valley and frighten anyone who is still out on the streets at that hour. Acquired in Denmark, the writing to the reverse suggests that it was purchased in 1970 by Danes visiting Lötschental at the right time of the year.
