An attractive four-panel hina’byôbu 雛屏風 (doll festival folding screen) featuring a continuous painting of a jinmaku 陣幕 (camp enclosure curtain).
The translucent black-and-white curtain is suspended from a taut rope shaded in soft blue and grey, held aloft by slender black poles topped with hexagonal finials. The curtain is decorated with crests 紋 (mon) depicting three loquat leaves in a circle (biwa 枇杷).
The multicoloured painting is executed on mulberry paper with a gilded background and set within a black lacquered wooden frame.
Period: Japan – Heisei 20 (2008)
Dimensions: Total width 173 cm (2 x 44.1 cm and 2 x 42.4 cm); Height 55 cm
In a very good condition with minor signs of wear consistent with age on both sides. Some small retouching to the front and repapering to the reverse. Please refer to the photos for a detailed condition reference.
Complete with its original cardboard storage box, inscribed and dated: 平成二十年 (Heisei 20 / Anno 2008).
Originally designed as the background screen for the upper tier of a hina-doll display, this screen also serves beautifully as a decorative wall piece thanks to its clean, graphical design.
A jinmaku is a type of curtain traditionally used to enclose a military encampment, forming a visual and symbolic barrier. In pre-modern Japan, it allowed samurai to meet privately in the field. Today, jinmaku are often seen in festivals and outdoor theatre performances, where they are also believed to help ward off evil spirits.
