Zushi 厨子 mit Happi Benzaiten 八臂弁財天 - Polychrome, Holz, Lack, Messing - Japan - Zweite Hälfte der Edo-Zeit (18. Jahrhundert / erste Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts)
A lacquered zushi 厨子 (portable Buddhist shrine) housing a finely carved polychrome figure of Happi Benzaiten 八臂弁財天, the eight-armed manifestation of Benzaiten.
The term happi 八臂 literally means “eight arms,” referring to the deity’s multiple arms holding various martial implements. In this form, Benzaiten appears as a weapon-bearing warrior goddess, embodying her role as a protector of Buddhism and a defender of the state.
The figure is seated on a lotus pedestal set upon stylised rockwork. She holds delicate brass weapons in her hands and wears flowing Chinese-style robes, rendered in polychrome pigments and gesso. Her head is crowned with a tiered conical crown and framed by a circular nimbus, enriched with small meditating Buddhas and hōju motifs 宝珠 (precious jewel).
The shrine itself is of traditional zushi form, finished in glossy black lacquer. The interior is decorated with gold-leaf lacquer, now showing an attractive aged patina.
Period: Japan – Second half Edo period (18th century / first half 19th century)
Dimensions:
Figure: Height 15.3 cm
Shrine: Height 18.6 cm, Width 14.4 cm, Depth 9.9 cm
Considering its age, the shrine is in very good condition, with some old wear consistent with age. The figure and pedestal are fixed and not removable. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference.
When shipped, we will include a certificate of authenticity.
