After a study trip through Belgium, France (where he received advice from Meissonier), Italy and Germany, he settled in the city of his teacher in 1847. He lived and worked there until 1869, after which he settled back in his hometown. His specialty was historical genre painting, in which he often had soldiers perform. He also painted representations from the Eighty Years' War and other subjects from national history. In 1872, a stamp issue was published according to his design with the image of King William III.
