Tetsubin 鉄瓶 (Kessel) - Bronze, Gusseisen - Japan - 19. Jahrhundert (spätes Edo-Zeitalter / frühes Meiji-Zeitalter)
A fantastic cast iron tetsubin 鉄瓶 (kettle) modelled in the form of a lotus flower, with tiered petals rising to form the body and continuing seamlessly into the lid, finished with a lobed mokkô-shaped loop handle.
One side bears an embossed apocryphal Kangxi reign inscription reading:
“Kangxi 43rd year, ninth month, sixth day; made on an auspicious day” 康熙四十三年九月六日 吉日造 (Anno 1704).
During the Edo period, Chinese bronzes from the Kangxi reign were highly admired in Japan for their balanced proportions, refined casting, and association with classical taste. Japanese metalworkers frequently adopted Chinese bronze forms, inscriptions, and Kangxi reign marks as an act of homage rather than as an attempt at deception.
Period: Japan – 19th century (Late Edo period/Early Meiji period).
Dimensions:
Height 21 cm, Width 21 cm, Depth 15.5 cm, Weight 3.1 kg.
The kettle is in very good original condition, with minimal wear consistent with age, including some interior oxidation. It has been tested and does not leak. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference.
