Schöne Holzmaserung kreative Kokeshi-Puppen – Paar von Usaburo Okamoto & Waichi Ishida - Holz - Japan - Shōwa Zeit (1926-1989)

Item Description This lot consists of two Japanese creative kokeshi dolls, presented as a matching pair that highlights the natural beauty of wood grain and refined modern craftsmanship. The smaller kokeshi is a work titled “Reishun” (The title can be translated as “Beautiful Spring”). It features a softly rounded form with a calm, introspective expression. Subtle carved details and painted floral motifs enhance the warmth of the wood, creating a quiet yet elegant presence. The base bears the artist’s seal. The larger kokeshi is an unusually tall example by its maker, with a slender, elongated silhouette. The natural vertical grain of the wood is used as a key design element, complemented by minimal painted accents. The serene facial expression and balanced proportions give this piece a dignified and gentle character. The base is also signed by the artist. Both pieces show age-related wear consistent with vintage handmade wooden objects, including small surface marks and patina, which add to their authenticity and charm. Please refer to the photographs for detailed condition. Artist Usaburo Okamoto (first generation) was a pioneering figure in modern creative kokeshi, known for introducing sculptural carving and wood-burning techniques alongside traditional painting. His works laid the foundation for what later became the Usaburo Kokeshi style, and his creations are highly regarded in the history of postwar Japanese folk art. Waichi Ishida is known for his small, charming creative kokeshi, making this larger-scale work a rare and notable example within his oeuvre. His pieces are appreciated for their gentle expressions and refined use of natural materials.
