The work depicts a tranquil night view of Ikaruga, with a five-storied pagoda and surrounding temple buildings set beneath a deep blue sky and a luminous full moon, creating a calm and contemplative atmosphere. The painting is executed in the gansaiga (mineral pigment) technique, which uses finely ground natural stone pigments. This method produces a distinctive granular texture and rich depth of colour, particularly evident in the layered blues of the night sky and the softly glowing moon. As part of the standard process for gansaiga, the washi paper was mounted onto a wooden panel before painting. Yamazaki Tadaaki was born in 1914 and studied under Kanashima Keika and Nishiyama Hideo. He was an associate member of Nitten and was an accomplished painter who received Special Selection awards, reflecting his recognised skill and standing in the Japanese art world. He specialised in Japanese landscapes, particularly scenes of historic temples, five-storied pagodas, and ancient capitals such as Ikaruga and Hōryū-ji. His works were exhibited in solo and group shows at major department stores, and examples were acquired by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The painting bears the artist’s signature and seal on the front. On the reverse, it is hand-inscribed “3F Ikaruga no Tsuki Tadaaki,” confirming the title and artist. The work is in very good used condition with minimal wear. Please refer to the photos for details. The technique is listed as “acrylic painting” in the item details due to the lack of a more suitable option in the system. However, this description is used for classification purposes only. The present work is actually created using traditional Japanese painting techniques. Dimensions: approx.
