Two Sparrows, Chrysanthemums and Peonies with Box - Yamamoto Baiitsu 山本梅逸 (1783-1856) - Japan - Späte Edo-Zeit

山本梅逸 Yamamoto Baiitsu (1783-1856) Nanga artist of the late Edo period. Born in Nagoya to a family of engravers. He first studied painting under 山田宮常 Yamada Kyujo (1747-1794), 張月樵 Cho Gessho (1765-1832). He and 中林竹洞 Nakabayashi Chikuto (1776-1853) studied painting under 神谷天遊 Kamiya Tenyu. He went to Kyoto to hone his painting skills. He excelled in flower-and-bird painting and Sansui landscape painting. His flower-and-bird paintings were especially well-received for the elegance and splendor of his coloring. In his later years, he returned to his hometown and became a painter in the Nagoya domain. Age: 1848 / 戊申 with signature 'Baiitsu Ryo' 梅逸亮 and seal 'Ryo in' 亮印 'Baiitsu' 某逸 A superbly detailed hanging scroll depicting two sparrows perched among blooming chrysanthemums and softly colored peonies, executed with extraordinary refinement and sensitivity on silk. The composition harmonizes delicate avian forms with lush yet controlled floral abundance, allowing each element to breathe within a carefully balanced field of negative space. Baiitsu’s precise brushwork captures the fine texture of feathers, leaves, and petals with remarkable clarity, while subtle gradations of color lend depth and quiet luminosity to the scene without overwhelming its elegant restraint. The sparrows, rendered with gentle animation and alert presence, introduce a natural rhythm that animates the stillness of the flowers and anchors the composition in lived observation. Signed and sealed by Yamamoto Baiitsu and dated 1848, the work exemplifies the mature flower-and-bird style for which he was especially admired in the late Edo period. The scroll is mounted in a refined traditional format with wooden roller ends and is accompanied by a storage box. As with all genuine antique works, there are age-related signs such as light creases, minor stains, and areas of wear consistent with its period and materials; these characteristics are visible in the photographs and should be appreciated as integral to the work’s authenticity and historical presence. 山本梅逸 Yamamoto Baiitsu (1783-1856) Japanese antique art Kakejiku Kakemono wall hanging scroll / Two Sparrows, Chrysanthemums and Peonies with Box Whole dimensions: 24" W x 76.6" H / 61cm x 194.7cm Inside dimensions: 16.6" W x 50" H / 42.3cm x 127cm Material: Silk Technique: Handpainted Roller ends: Wood Weight: 1120g including Box Condition Antique items have originally crease, stain, damage, and more.
