BOHEMIA - Curt Schlevogt - Kasten (2) - INGRID - Glas - Malachit / Jadeglas

Pair of Malachite Glass Caskets Curt Schlevogt, Bohemia Art Deco, circa 1930s This striking pair of Art Deco caskets is executed in rich green malachite glass, one of the most celebrated achievements of Bohemian pressed glass from the interwar period. The boxes display bold sculptural reliefs typical of the era: one lid featuring a reclining classical female figure framed by stylized roses, the other crowned with a dramatic chrysanthemum-like floral motif. Together, they embody the sensual geometry and ornamental confidence of 1930s design. Malachite glass—sometimes referred to as jade glass—was developed to imitate the depth, banding, and luxurious appearance of natural malachite stone. Through carefully controlled coloring and pressing techniques, Bohemian glassmakers achieved swirling tonal variations ranging from deep emerald to soft translucent green, giving each object a vivid, almost stone-like presence while retaining the brilliance and precision of glass. Curt Schlevogt’s workshop was among the most respected producers of this type of decorative pressed glass. His designs combined technical mastery with strong artistic vision, resulting in objects that were both affordable luxury items and serious design statements. These caskets exemplify that balance: sensuous, tactile forms paired with crisp mold definition and a lustrous surface finish. In the early 20th century, Bohemia enjoyed an international reputation for exceptional glassmaking quality, built on centuries of technical expertise and innovation. Bohemian pressed glass was widely admired for its clarity, durability, and sophisticated design language, rivaling the best French and German production of the period. Pieces such as these were exported worldwide and became symbols of modern taste and craftsmanship. Today, malachite glass objects by Curt Schlevogt are highly sought after by collectors of Art Deco glass, appreciated for their bold color, sculptural depth, and enduring elegance.
