Ehon Toyotomi Kunkōki – Erste Reihe, Band 4 - Japan - Späte Edo-Zeit – ca. 1800er Jahre

This is an original Japanese illustrated woodblock-printed book (Wahon) titled “Ehon Toyotomi Kunkōki – First Series, Volume 4”, a historical narrative focusing on the military achievements and legendary episodes associated with Toyotomi Hideyoshi, one of the most important figures in Japanese history. Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537–1598) rose from humble peasant origins to become the de facto ruler of Japan, completing the unification of the country at the end of the Sengoku (Warring States) period. Through military brilliance and political reforms, he laid the foundations of early modern Japan. In Western historical terms, he is often compared to Napoleon Bonaparte as a self-made military and political leader who rose rapidly from obscurity to supreme power. After his death, Hideyoshi became a legendary hero, frequently depicted in books, theater, and illustrated prints during the Edo period. This volume contains finely detailed black-and-white woodblock illustrations (musha-e) depicting dramatic scenes of samurai warriors, court ceremonies, interior palace settings, and moments of political tension. The expressive linework and careful composition reflect the high standards of Edo-period popular publishing. The text is printed in classical Japanese and arranged alongside the illustrations, offering both visual impact and historical narrative value. The book is bound in traditional fukuro-toji (stab binding) and retains its original paper covers. The surface shows age-related wear, discoloration, and minor stains consistent with genuine Edo-period use, enhancing its authenticity and collectible appeal. This is Volume 4 of the first series, making it an important reference piece for collectors of Japanese history, samurai art, and woodblock-printed books. Artist / Maker Information The specific author and illustrator are not individually credited, which is typical for Edo-period popular historical publications. The book was produced by an Edo-period Japanese publisher using traditional woodblock printing techniques. The series Ehon Toyotomi Kunkōki is well known for shaping popular images of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and samurai ideals among urban readers of the time. Based on the binding style, printing quality, paper, and illustration format, this volume is estimated to date from the late Edo period (early 19th century, Western calendar). Size: Approx.
